My Story - Ruth Lewis

The dream throughout my school life – to be a police officer…it didn’t happen.

Rejected at the first attempt, I was devastated and with no back up plan (who does at the age of 19?), I fell into a job, which developed into a career within the chemical industry.

Being a research chemist didn’t last; 10 years later I was made redundant, had the worst nightmare of an interview and spent 2 years travelling 90 miles a day over the Pennines.

About Me

A break and a rest were required so needing to re-evaluate my career, I decided to leave my job in chemistry and go to university to study psychology.

I had no idea where this would end up but by this point, I didn’t care. I chose a subject which I was genuinely interested in and which I thought would give me more choices later down the line. And it did.

What followed was 14 years of working within the Criminal Justice System as a Probation Officer and though this was hard at times, I truly loved the work I did and the chance to help change lives of those convicted of a crime. The latter part of my career within Probation was as a Coach and Mentor to new officers which brought a different set of challenges. Throughout my time with Probation, I co-wrote interventions, workshops and wrote programmes in order to support a change in thinking and behaviour.

I thought I would follow this career path until I retired but the job was not what it was when I started; I was becoming frustrated by the working environment, endless meaningless targets and long, relentless hours. In order to have a better life at home and at work, I had to do something different and coaching provided me with the opportunity and knowledge to reassess the direction of my life.

Following a programme of learning and development of my own, I made the decision to make some changes. I participated in Neuro Linguistic Programming and Coaching training whilst at the same time as working and later completing a Master’s Degree in Applied Coaching. This gave me the opportunity to step out of the Public Sector, transitioning into a coaching role which brings me to where I am today with my own coaching business.

It wasn’t an easy decision; at times there was self-doubt and the fear of failing but I knew something had to change. As an introvert, it was and continues to be a challenge to put myself out there in the world and show up as a coach, but anything that came easily would not be worth having and growth comes from those feelings of discomfort.

Over the past seven years I have also been part of partnership building a successful E-Commerce business and this is from a position of having no prior business experience or knowledge of E-Commerce other than being an avid consumer.

Decisions made within my working life have given me the chance to work towards creating opportunities. Speaking from experience, we have never lived in a better time to be able to create a life we want.

With the right level of support and engagement, people can make extraordinary changes in their lives and can create the future they want, even if they do not exactly what that future life may look like.

I have been where you are right now. I know exactly what it is like to feel frustrated, unhappy, bored, tired and overwhelmed. And I know that it takes to make that jump out of well-paid, stable career so why wouldn’t it be possible for you? You haven’t come to this position overnight, this has probably been years in the making with many sleepless nights or days of questioning, ‘is this my life forever until I retire?’ Let now be the moment to take the next right step out of your existing career, realise your potential and make the tranistion into a career which excites you.
